HOSTING THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION "STEP OUT TO FIGHT DIABETES" WALK THIS WEEKEND, I'LL BE HOPING TO SEE YOU THERE! LOCATIONS ACROSS NEW ENGLAND...
It may be America's fastest growing disease, but that doesn't mean there's nothing we can do about it! For the second year in a row, I'll have the distinct honor and pleasure of hosting the American Diabetes Association "Step Out to Fight Diabetes" walk, this coming Sunday, October 21 at Merrimack College in Andover, Massachusetts. But that's not all of the locations where you can walk! I know many of you check into my site from all across New England, and there are a number of locations where walks will be ongoing both Saturday AND Sunday (continue reading to find out more)! In addition to the 21 million children and adults living with diabetes across the United States, diabetes can lead to cardiovascular problems, kidney failure, blindness, lower limb amputations and more. So, in essence, Sunday's walk is not only for those afflicted by diabetes, but with the very real goal of preventing resultant complications.
I'm hoping to see you there - click "continue reading this post" below to find out more!
This walk is the perfect one for folks who are looking to make a difference in our community, but have limited time or are hoping for a relatively brief walk that can be accomplished in no more than a couple of hours - especially wonderful for those with a busy schedule, or unable to walk more than a couple of miles! The best part about the walk is what the proceeds will fund - the American Diabetes Association, a non-profit group whose money goes directly to diabetes research, information and advocacy. When weighing the subject, consider some of the following statistics:
- Nearly one in ten American adults has diabetes
- Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease in the United States
- One of three Americans born today will develop diabetes in their lifetime if current trends continue
- Each year, more than 80,000 people with diabetes undergo amputation
- Nearly one-third of the 21 million children and adults in the U.S. living with diabetes are unaware that they have the disease
So what are the details on the walk I'll be hosting?
When: THIS SUNDAY, October 21, 2007...registration at 9 AM, walk kicks off at 10 AM
Where: Merrimack College, Route 114, Andover, MA
Available Routes: Either three or five miles
Entertainment, food and drink will be on hand, and I'll be excited to not only host the event, but of course walk with everyone, too!
There are a number of other locations to walk this weekend, too, though:
Saturday, October 20: Manchester, NH and Rutland, VT
Sunday, October 21: Nashua, NH, Andover, MA (the one I'll be at), Dennis, MA, Newport, RI
If you'd rather volunteer than walk, you can call 1-888-DIABETES to find out more.
Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing you "on the road!" :)
-Matt
